Live Steel Drums, Art Show & a Virgin This WeekEnd
December 7, 2007
Live Steel Drums, Art Show & Sale, Virgin Coconut Oil This Weekend At Ripe! On Sunday, December 9th from 5-9 p.m., Ripe Kitchen & Bar will be hosting a Contemporary Art Exhibition & Sale . 20 EXCLUSIVE pieces by Visual Artist and Dealer, Melvin Bridgewater, will be on display. Melvin’s work encompasses religious, romantic and family oriented creations influencing various ethnic persuasions. The show will be accompanied by Steel Drum Virtuoso, Casey Edwards. Do not miss this evening of Art, Music, and Culture, as Ripe continues its mission to promote authentic Caribbean culture-food, music and art, which deserves a place among the world’s best. See you there. Where has the coconut oil gone? Whatever happened to that wonderful coconut oil we used religiously back in the Caribbean to cook almost ANYTHING? The 90’s gave it a bad rap, and it has virtually disappeared from the shelves of almost EVERY supermarket, even in the islands. Suddenly, someone decided to take a closer look and realized that it’s the hydrogenated/trans-fatty oils that are killing off the population, not our unadulterated, organic, wild , naturally processed coconut oil that has been used in the tropics as a mainstay in our diets for thousands of years! WITHOUT ALL THE HEART DISEASE AND CHOLESTOROL ISSUES THEY CLAIM IT CAUSES! Anyway, that’s for another newsletter—today I’m just putting the word out there from my kitchen—On a recent trip to the deep backwoods of Jamaica, I stumbled upon a small community that still uses coconut oil. Better yet, they still make it from scratch the old –fashioned way….BY HAND! No Machines, No Presses, No Blenders…No NOTHING but their BARE HANDS!...This story too is for another newsletter..where I will tell you of their amazing lifestyle and all that I experienced there that just BLEW ME AWAY! Any ways…I snuck a TINY bottle of their “Made From Scratch” coconut oil into the kitchen at Ripe for this week-end. This oil is so precious and concentrated with flavor, It is not used to cook with, but rather to drizzle a few drops over a freshly prepared dish, just as Italians would drizzle Extra Virgin Olive Oil on simple pastas to round out the flavor. We will be drizzling it over our Roasted Red Snappers, to round out the flavor of the fish cooked in Ripe’s Seafood Broth with Chinese vegetables, Spinach, Okra and Rice. These fish once again JUST arrived from Trinidad and are SUPER DUPER Fresh! Do Not miss this dish this Week-End. As a matter of fact, if you order your fish between 5pm and 8pm, tonight only, (Friday) will offer you both the Roasted Red Snapper Entrée, and our Caribbean Crab Cake appetizer, together, at the Ripe RIDICULOUS price of ONLY $19.95. This is an internet only offer…It is not advertised at the restaurant, and will only be available if ordered by 8pm, and while they last! So Come on down early and get your Fish on tonight at Ripe! You MUST experience that Virgin Coconut Oil! DO NOT FORGET THE STEEL DRUMS AND ART SHOW THIS SUNDAY AT 5PM SHARP!
